The Ventura Film Festival launched in 2004 and has displayed hundreds of movies, generally exceeding 200 films per summer season, and has attracted attention from the international cinematic community. Distinguished events have encompassed hosting award winning filmmaker Dylan O'Neil, the original world champion here surfers Peter "PT" Townend as well as Ian Cairns, four-time world champion Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/MMA competitor martial arts icon Fabio Leopoldo, and the half-century commemoration of West Side Story, which comprised receiving the entire Academy Award winning cast of West Side Story, including Academy Award winner/Golden Globe winner George Chakiris and Golden Globe winner/Academy Award nominee Russ Tamblyn. The founding executive director of the Ventura Film Festival was chosen to participate, together with many of Hollywood's biggest stars, in the 50-year anniversary event of West Side Story and Hollywood's footprint/handprint ceremony for Oscar winners Rita Moreno, George Chakiris, together with Golden Globe honoree Russ Tamblyn at the legendary Chinese Theater in Hollywood. This celebration also functioned as the official BluRay launch by Fox and MGM of the timeless West Side Story, which is commonly viewed by critics and fans as the greatest musical of all time. This distinguished honor and involvement highlights the festival's meaningful presence and honored place within the entertainment industry.
